Endress+Hauser, the worldwide process control and automation company, is helping victims of the tsunami disaster in Sri Lanka by financing the reconstruction of a village in the south of the country. The project directly benefits the affected people, both during and after construction.
An estate of 14 residences, two shops, a playground and a community pavilion is currently under construction in Pitiduwas, a village near Talpe (Province of Galle) on Sri Lanka's southern coast. Endress+Hauser will bear the construction costs of almost 100,000 US dollars (€83,000). For Klaus Endress, CEO of the Endress+Hauser Group, this is "the expression of our social responsibility as a company”.
The people of the disaster-hit region will also benefit during the construction phase. All orders are placed with local firms who, in turn, employ local people - if possible, the very people who will later live in the housing estate. In addition, all materials will be purchased locally.
Sri Lanka's Talpe Rehabilitation and Development Trust, a nonprofit organization, is coordinating activities. Klaus Endress emphasizes: "We have found experienced and trustworthy partners who make sure that the help gets to those most affected.” On behalf of the Endress family, Karin Endress looks after the tsunami project, supported by Yvonne and Lynda Endress. "We'll be part of this project for years to come,” states Klaus Endress.
